Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

I have recently written blogs for peri-menopause and menopause so it is only fair to write a blog about one of the male issues of aging. Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy is also known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.  As men enter middle age the prostate grows and although many men have no symptoms the prostate can actually slow or block the urinary flow.

Some symptoms are  

  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Delay in urinating
  • Hesitation before being able to urinate
  • Urgency of urination
  • Post urination drip

 The blockage can cause the bladder to only empty part way and this can lead to infection.  There are some natural things you can do about this.

Lifestyle

 There are a number of simple changes that can assist in relieving the symptoms of BPH. 

  • Limit beverages in the evening and try to avoid drinking within 2 hours of bed
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption
  • Double urinate ( go once then go again a moment or so later)
  • Schedule bathroom visits to retrain the bladder
  • Avoid decongestants and antihistamines
  • Stay active 

Saw Palmetto

 Saw palmetto is a specific for treating this condition.  Rather than shrink the prostate it has been found to shrink the lining which is what causes the pressure. 

According to the University of Maryland Medical Centre studies show that saw palmetto can be as beneficial or even more than the pharmaceutical drugs Proscar and Avodart.  They state that half of German urologists prefer treatment with saw palmetto over drugs. 

Nettles

 The part of the nettle plant used for BPH is the root.  

Stinging nettle root in conjunction with saw palmetto has been shown to reduce certain symptoms of BPH.  These include

  • Post urination drip
  • Reduced flow
  • Incomplete voiding
  • Urgency

Pygeum

 The part used is the bark of the Pygeum evergreen from central and south Africa.  It has been used traditionally to treat BPH.  It can assist with 

  • Frequency of Urination
  • Nighttime urination
  • Residual urine volume

 Grass Pollen

 At first this may sound strange given that one of the things you will need to avoid is antihistamines.  For those that have allergies don’t worry, the grass pollen has it’s allergens removed.

According to NYU Langone Medical Center studies have shown benefits from a combination of grass pollen consisting of rye, corn and timothy grass.  The symptoms that were relieved were night urination and urine retention.

The same way menopause interferes with your life, BPH is unpleasant and can make your life miserable.  It is nice to know that there are some more natural ways to deal with it.

 As with all herbs, make sure you let your doctor know that you are taking them and please research the interaction with drugs you may already be on.
