Energetic Helpers for Fall

Although I did a blog Herbs for Energy in June I thought I would add to it here since it’s that time of year again when summer is waning and school, extra curricular activities, deadlines and the inevitable lead up to the holidays can be exhausting.  Is there a natural way to get more energy?  The answer, happily, is yes! 

Along with the usual advice to eat properly, drink water and get plenty of sleep, there are some herbal supplements that can help.

Wheat Grass

A year or so ago a friend asked me if this really worked.  I did some research bought some supplements and the answer is yes!  Wheat grass helps you release fat and build muscle tone.  It also gives you an energy boost that lasts.  The supplements I took were good but if you really want the full benefits you need to grow your own wheat grass and juice it.  

You can buy frozen wheat grass juice pucks which will be beneficial but fresh is best.  For full details see my blog on wheat grass. 

Ginseng or Siberian Ginseng

The distinction between ginseng and Siberian ginseng comes from the fact that they are actually different species.  The true ginseng Korean, Panax, Red are better for men.  According to Traditional Chinese Medicine they are the warm ginsengs.  They increase stamina, relieve stress, increase energy and are even thought to be helpful in sexual functioning.

Siberian ginseng is actually Eleutherococcus senticosus.  It is different from ginseng and has different chemical properties.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is a cooling herb.  This makes it helpful for women that are perimenopausal.  As with ginseng, it relieves stress, increases energy, improves stamina and endurance and increases sexual desire.  For the full story stay tuned I will be doing a blog on ginseng in the near future.

Gingko Biloba

Gingko gets a nod as an energy herb because of it’s effect on the brain.  If you are mentally foggy gingko is a great herb for you.  It is a vasodilator which improves blood flow to the brain.  Improving circulation in the brain helps clear mental fog.  It also increases ATP production in your body.  ATP helps your brain metabolize glucose for energy.  See my blog on Gingko for more.

Chocolate

There really is nothing bad about this herb except when you add dairy and sugar.  Cacao is extremely high in antioxidants and magnesium.  If you try eating cacao beans or nibs you will get an immediate boost of energy.

Cacao helps you release endorphins for an immediate boost in energy that can actually feel like a buzz.  It also helps improve brain circulation which assists in getting rid of brain fog.  Unfortunately adding dairy and sugar immediately gets rid of all the health benefits of this amazing “superfood”.  If you want a very interesting chocolate experience try Fruity Cacao beans.  I have only been able to find them at Sunfood.  The link is at the bottom of the page.  Check out my blog archive for several posts on chocolate and cacao.
