Citrus Familiar Fruits with Amazing Health Benefits

Most people reading this blog are familiar with some form of citrus.  Whether it is lemon, lime, grapefruit or orange citrus is more than just fruit!

Lemon

Lemon is beneficial as a food and medicine and it is also useful around the house.

Medicinally lemons actions include anti-scurvy, anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, antihistamine and anti-bacterial.  

Throughout time it has been used to treat:

  • Coughs
  • Colds
  • Influenza
  • Diphtheria
  • Fevers
  • Sick headaches 
  • Nausea

Lemon can also be used as a household cleaner.  Mix lemon essential oil with distilled water and use it to clean kitchen counters.  Squeeze a lemon down the sink to freshen drains.  Mix lemon essential oil with eucalyptus essential oil in distilled water to clean glass surfaces.  Lemon oil is excellent for your wooden furniture.

A tip from an aroma therapist friend was to use lemon essential oil when trying to remove the persistent gummy residue from price tags as well as any other gummy residue.  It works like a charm for this purpose! 

The vitamin C content in lemons is excellent for boosting your immune system and fending off colds.  If a cold gets you though, lemon, lemon, lemon!  The anti-viral actions of lemon can help with both colds and fevers.

Lemon is an excellent liver detoxifier.  Lemon water can help your poor overworked liver.  At the same time because lemon increases peristalsis of the intestine it will assist in keeping you regular! 

One of the best actions of lemons is their anti-oxidant properties.  Lemon helps to seek out and destroy the free radicals which create cellular

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is useful for hangovers, its Vitamin C content makes it an excellent anti-oxidant and immune system booster, it cleanses the liver, lowers cholesterol, helps prevent cancer, assists in weight loss and aids skin health.

The antioxidant Naringenin is found in grapefruit and other citrus fruit.  Naringenin is the compound that gives grapefruit its bitter flavour.  It also helps the liver break down fatty acids.  It lowers lipids, which means that it may be useful in treating type2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.  Metabolic syndrome includes elevated insulin levels and high blood pressure.

Researchers at Hebrew University claim that Naringenin has a clear safety record and may even help to protect the liver.

The phytonutrients in oranges have been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.  They also have very effective anti-inflammatory properties.  A great deal of these properties are found in the peel and the white skin around the orange.

The vitamin C content of oranges are what provide them with their antioxidant abilities.  The antioxidants protect cells from free radical damage and pollutants.  A good dose of vitamin C daily can help reduce the risk of colon cancer.  Vitamin C also helps prevent the oxidative damage that causes inflammation making it an excellent vitamin in cases of inflammatory disease such as
