When you hear the Christmas story that the Three Magi brought gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to the baby Jesus, you may wonder why anyone would want Frankincense.
Frankincense is harvested predominantly from western Oman. At points throughout history it was used to purify the air, embalm bodies and as medicine. It was charred and used as the Kohl Egyptians used around their eyes. Frankincense was extremely expensive and as a gift it would have been welcome.
Frankincense as Medicine
Frankincense has a number of medicinal uses such as:
- Respiratory issues
- Stress and Anxiety
Carminative and Digestive
In order for frankincense to have effects on digestion and gas it must be taken orally. I would not recommend ingesting the essential oil unless you are certain that it is food grade. There are frankincense supplements available at health food stores which give a standardized dose. There will also be food grade essential oils available at health food/herbal pharmacies.
For centuries frankincense has been used to prevent gas and stomach aches. It increases peristaltic motion in the intestines and also speeds up the production of digestive juices. It is nor recommended during pregnancy.
Stress Anxiety and Depression
Frankincense has been used successfully for centuries to calm the nerves and relieve anxiety and depression. Its sedative properties have also been used to effectively deal with anger.
Frankincense is used in sacred incense because of it’s ability to cause feelings of introspection and spirituality. It can lower blood pressure and restore calm.
The oil can be applied or inhaled to fade scars, pock marks and stretch marks. It helps promote the regrowth of healthy cells. It keeps existing tissue healthy and works as an astringent. Frankincense oil will also remove sun spots and the tiny wrinkles around your eyes.
Some people actually chew Frankincense resin as gum. This is beneficial for oral health, as a sedative and will cause a feeling of euphoria. It is beneficial in prayer and meditation to assist in opening to intuition.
The “high” from chewing frankincense resin is mild and actually has been described as a sense of calm.
Before chewing the resin make sure of the source. Most resin available as incense is good only for that. The clearer and lighter the Frankincense resin is, the higher the quality. Health food stores and herbal pharmacies would be places to find it.
There are numerous health benefits from Frankincense and even the smoke is said to help physically, mentally and spiritually. Frankincense is truly a gift worth receiving.
