Green tea is one of the products that we are constantly told are good for us.  What is it about this tea that has so many people drinking it?

What is it?

Green tea leaves are the slightly more mature leaves of the Camellia sinensis.  The plant that black and white teas come from.  Green tea is wilted first then steamed or pan fried, rolled and then dried.

What makes it Healthy?

The most valued ingredients in green tea for health are the antioxidants and the polyphenols.

Antioxidants

The antioxidants help reduce oxidative damage to the cells of the body.  Oxidative damage is like cell rust.  It makes you age because the cells are damaged.  Antioxidants fend off the free radicals which are the byproducts of oxygen usage.  These free radicals are what cause the oxidative damage.

Polyphenols

Polyphenols are chemicals that also help slow aging and protect the body against damage.  Polyphenols can be anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic.  Inflammation is related to a number of diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Celiac disease, Atherosclerosis, Cancer and Diabetes.

Green Tea Benefits

According to the UMM website green tea helps to prevent coronary artery disease.  It lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels.  Research is showing that green tea can prevent cholesterol from being absorbed in the intestines and also rid the body of cholesterol.  It is the polyphenols that are thought to bring this about.

Polyphenols are also thought to be what lowers the risk of cancer.  Researchers believe that polyphenols can also kill cancer cells.

The antioxidant levels in green tea also benefit

  • Skin
  • Eyes
  • Immune System

 Weight Loss

One of the benefits of green tea is its assistance in weight loss.  There has been evidence showing that the catechins in green tea can help burn fat.  Green tea is also thought to boost the metabolism.  This doesn’t mean that you will get suddenly slim from drinking green tea.  If you are healthy and not on any medication then there are green tea supplements on the market that can help you with this.  If you are taking medication please do not use green tea supplements without checking with your doctor first.

Eyes

There are a number of references on the internet to a study conducted in Hong Kong which found that the antioxidants from green tea actually do help to prevent eye disease such as Glaucoma.  I have included links to two of them at the end of the blog.

Memory

Medical News Today sites a study from Switzerland that shows green tea has beneficial effects on working memory.  The study suggests “that green tea could be promising in the treatment of cognitive impairments associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as dementia.”

It is clear that drinking green tea is a healthy choice.  The thing to consider when choosing the green tea for you is the grading of the tea.  The more the stems are included the lower the grade of the tea.  I personally choose loose leaf tea from tea shops.  I prefer dragon pearl green tea but it is very expensive so I have it for a treat.
