Health Benefits of Oranges

Most people know that oranges are high in Vitamin C.  Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect cells from free radical damage.  There are health benefits to eating oranges that you may not be aware of.

Oranges Health Benefits:

  • High Fibre
  • Good for your heart
  • Able to reduce risk of ischemic stroke in women
  • Improve blood pressure
  • Improve skin health 

Oranges and Fibre

It surprised me when during a diet I discovered that oranges actually have more fibre than apples!  They contain approximately 4 grams of fibre.  The fibre in oranges is mostly soluble fibre.

Soluble fibre assists in digestion.  It helps push excess LDL (bad cholesterol) out of your system.  It also helps regulate blood sugar by slowing the absorption of sugar. 

Insoluble fibre is the fibre that assists in pushing the food through your intestinal tract.  It prevents constipation and assists in regular bowel movements which in turn helps prevent diseases of the intestinal tract. 

Strokes in Women

A study was done in England which showed that women with high levels of flavone, a compound in oranges, were 19% less likely to have an ischemic stroke.  Ischemic strokes are cause by the artery/arteries that supply the blood to the brain being blocked.  Although the study was done on women that drank orange or grapefruit juice, it is thought that eating the fruit would actually have better results. 

Heart

Both oranges and grapefruit contain vitamin C, choline, fibre and potassium.  All are helpful in heart health, however, the potassium is extremely important for heart health.  Increasing potassium and decreasing sodium can make the risk of heart disease lower.  Potassium helps reduce the risk of ischemic heart disease and stroke.

The high potassium in oranges has vasodilation effects which improve blood pressure. 

Skin

As we all know oranges are high in vitamin C.  Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant.  it protects cells, including skin cells, from free radical damage.  Free radicals are what cause your skin to age and develop spots.  Eating oranges can keep your skin younger and healthier.

A caution here is that while researching this article I came across a number or articles from respected sources that are researching the link between oranges and grapefruit and melanoma.  Melanoma is skin cancer and some research is showing that there may be a link between the two.  I would definitely avoid using any topical application of orange or grapefruit oil when going out into the sun.
