Health Benefits of Rosemary

The BBC has an article regarding the effects of rosemary essential oil on memory so I won’t belabour that point.  Instead I will place the link here.  Instead I will focus on some of the other amazing health benefits of Rosemary. 

Some of the benefits are:

Macular Degeneration

The benefits from rosemary for macular degeneration may stem from the fact that it has a high vitamin A content.  Vitamin A retinol produces the pigments in the retina while carotenoids (beta carotene) are antioxidant and prevent cell damage.  Studies are still being conducted on beta carotene and macular degeneration. 

Alopecia

Alopecia plain and simple is hair loss.  Rosemary has been used for centuries to treat this condition.  Before you rush out and stock up be aware that the benefits take some work.  To reap the benefits of hair regrowth from rosemary you will need to get a high quality essential oil.  This will need to be massaged into the scalp daily.  The other option is to use rosemary tea as a rinse for your hair.  This means steeping rosemary nightly and allowing it to cool prior to application on your hair.  Legend has it that this will also turn your hair back to its original colour.  I tried it for a while and noticed a little colour difference but I didn’t stick with it for very long. 

Cancer

The antioxidant benefits of rosemary help protect cells from free radical damage.  Rosmarenic acid and caffeic acid are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.  The carnosol in rosemary is thought to detoxify substances that can initiate the breast cancer process.  Rosemary is also thought to inhibit tumour growth.  It is helpful in a number of different cancers.

Brain aging

Along with the benefits to memory, rosemary also assists in preventing physical damage to the brain.  Carnosic acid in rosemary can protect the brain from neurodegeneration.  This is damage by toxins and free radicals that are thought to contribute to strokes, dementia and Alzheimer’s.

 Inflammation

The anti-inflammatory properties of rosemary come from the high level of vitamin c.  Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects cells from free radical damage.  By doing this it decreases the risk of inflammation.  Vitamin C is excellent for maintaining smooth muscle tissue and connective tissue. 

It is clear that rosemary is good for the body and the mind.
