Fibromyalgia Herbs

According to the Mayo Clinic Fibromyalgia includes:

Widespread musculoskeletal pain
Fatigue
Sleep issues
Mood issues
Memory issues

It is believed to amplify painful sensations by affecting how your brain processes pain.
There is no single treatment for fibromyalgia. It is generally treated with a combination of pain medications and anti-depressants. Let’s take a look at some herbs that can help.

Panax Ginseng
Studies have been conducted on the efficacy of Panax ginseng for the treatment of fibromyalgia. The results were positive for pain, energy and sleep. There was no change in anxiety and mood disorders. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of studies on Panax ginseng. The other drug and placebo groups were also found to have some improvement. Lemon Balm
This is my favourite herb for the treatment of depression. It calms and levels the mood without causing sluggishness. It is so effective in treating depression that it was used medically to treat this condition prior to the use of valium. For more information, you can check out my blog here.

Gingko Biloba
Most people know about gingko for its effect on memory. It is also incredibly good for varicose veins. As a vasodilator it can help with blood flow and the pain caused by inhibited blood flow. According to the report card by the Mayo Clinic a combination of CoQ10 and gingko improved quality of life and self-rating scores for people suffering from fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, not a lot of research has been completed on the effects of gingko by itself.

Inflammation is thought to be the underlying cause of most disease and pain. It is what causes discomfort in joints and muscles and can make life miserable. Fortunately there are simple ways to reduce inflammation based on diet and lifestyle.

The usual treatments for fibromyalgia include mild exercise, journaling and psychological treatment. It is clear that the treatment of fibromyalgia is more a treatment of symptoms rather than an understanding of the cause or causes. Research is ongoing.
