Biotin – Vitamin H is Really a B Complex Vitamin and Coenzyme

Normally I stay away from writing about specific vitamins. I am an herbalist, after all, and that is my main focus. I am making an exception in this case because of an amazing thing that has just happened.

I have been exhausted for years. I manage 4 hours sleep at best. I get up and putter around and then go back to bed but I have only had a solid 8 hours twice in the past 15 years.

I have tried herbs, meditation, exercise and everything else. I am a hypnotherapist so I even tried self hypnosis. It gets me to sleep but still only 4 hours. Drinking peppermint tea about an hour or so before bed is what allowed me the 8 hour nights but it doesn’t work every time.

Last week my blog was on Strengthening your Nails. It was by trying one of the suggestions that I discovered something absolutely amazing. One of the things that there is a small amount of research on is taking biotin for your hair and nails.

I started taking biotin about 4 days ago. By the afternoon of the first day I discovered that my energy was higher. I worked yesterday which is normally exhausting for me. When I got home from work,  I sat down at my computer and wrote up rough drafts of blogs for the Myth, Magic and Medicine blog I have just started. It is on this website along with this blog.
Having the energy to write after a day at work is unusual. I normally come home completely drained. I usually just drop into a chair and try to stay awake for the evening.

Antioxidants

Today while cleaning my house I realized my energy level is pretty much back to where it was 15 years ago. The only thing I have done differently is taking the Biotin!

Before you rush out and start taking it let me give you some important information on it.

What is It?
Biotin is a B complex vitamin. It is also known as Vitamin H. According to WebMD it is also a coenzyme. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that B vitamins help the body convert carbohydrates to fuel. They help the body metabolize fats and protein. They also help the nervous system function properly.

They go on to state that it is unusual to have a biotin deficiency. You can get enough from eating cooked egg yolks, cauliflower, nuts and beans.

There is some research that shows that biotin can help with insulin production and glucose synthesis. At least one study showed that it may be beneficial in type 2 Diabetes. My suggestion would be that if you are being treated for type 2 diabetes, you should consult your doctor before taking ANYTHING herbal, vitamin or other.

Biotin has interactions with anti-convulsants, glyburide and insulin.

Remember before you take any supplements, you need to research any other medications, supplements and over the counter medicines for interactions. Here is a good blog from Medical News Today.
