Foods to Strengthen Finger Nails

 

Last weeks topic was toe nail fungus. This weeks topic is how to strengthen your finger nails.

Some of us have brittle nails to begin with. Many others have finally done with false nails. As part of the false nail process, the nail tech must grind down your actual nails. This leaves them weak and takes a very long time to heal. Here are some suggestions to help the process.

Biotin
Biotin is a B-complex vitamin found in a number of foods. The recommended daily dose of biotin is 30 micrograms per day for adults.
There is evidence to support that biotin can help strengthen hair and nails. It also has the added benefit of assisting with food metabolism and possibly assisting with diabetes.

Some of the top biotin rich foods include
-Almonds
-Peanuts
-Cooked Eggs
-Sweet Potatoes
-Yeast grains and meats and fish also contain biotin in smaller amounts.

Silica
Silica helps strengthen and repair brittle nails. It also helps with bone density and strength as well as helping with hair strength and health. There are a few foods that contain silica such as
-Oats
-Barley
-Potatoes
-Whole grains
-Beets
-Asparagus

The best herb for silica is Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) . It is high in silica and can give results in a week or 2. The drawback with taking horsetail supplements is that it is also a diuretic and can increase urinary frequency.

Folic Acid
Folic acid is thought to help nails grow. Most of the research I did talked about hair growth rather than nail growth, however WebMD mentioned it along with Biotin so here are some excellent foods for folic acid.

-Green leafy vegetables
-Broccoli
-Legumes
-Eggs
-Seeds
-Citrus Fruit

Gelatin

Gelatin has been used for decades to lengthen and strengthen nails. I
The one fact that needs to be documented up front is that gelatin is made from the bones fibrous tissue and organs of animals. Yes, even the gelatin used in marshmallows has this as its source so if you are vegetarian or vegan you will need to find other sources. There are several on the market.

There is little to no proof anywhere on the internet that gelatin actually works for strengthening nails and hair. That said, I have a boss at the store that swears taking gelatin has helped her nails and hair grow. In fact, over the years when I have lamented my poor peeling nails I have been regaled with stories about the benefits of gelatin.

My suggestion for healthy nails? Make sure to eat a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, legumes and protein. Pamper your nails by massaging coconut oil or some other oil into them. Happy Hoof which is a product that they use for horses is actually my favourite. The maker of my favourite leave in hair treatment Mane ‘n Tail have a product called Hoofmaker.
