Oranges the Magic Fruit

Most of us take oranges for granted. They are always there at the nearest produce counter. Unlike sailors of old, most of us are not in danger of scurvy so we don’t give a whole lot of thought to this magical fruit!

Fibre

Did you know that oranges have more fibre than apples? Oranges contain 4 grams of fibre. Most of it is soluble fibre which:
-Helps lower blood cholesterol levels
-Control blood glucose levels
-Manage diarrhea
-Reduce symptoms of IBS

Along with the soluble fibre, oranges also contain insoluble fibre. This is the fibre that helps push the food through your intestinal tract.

Antioxidants and Vitamin C

Oranges contain high levels of vitamin C which is an antioxidant. This means it protects your cells from free radical damage and pollutants. A good dose of vitamin C can help reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Vitamin C is also an excellent immune system booster. Taking vitamin C every day can help ward of colds and flu. Unfortunately many people take vitamin C in conjunction with Echinacea. These two things counteract each other so you may as well have not taken them in the first place.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is extremely important for eye health. It is an excellent supplement to take when diagnosed with “dry-eye”. This is a common complaint in post-menopausal women.

When I was told I would have to use drops every day for the rest of my life I rebelled. I don’t like being told that I have to do something. I searched through the herbs and supplements for a solution. I found vitamin A. As long as I take it daily and drink enough water I do not have dry eye issues.

**Note** I sometimes skip a day with my supplements. Your body will tell you that you have enough by making you feel a little off when you go to take them.

Vitamin A is also excellent for skin health. It
-Improves hydration
-Treats acne
-Repairs epidermal cell structure

Strokes in Women

A study was done in England which showed that women with high levels of flavone, a compound in oranges, were 19% less likely to have an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes are cause by the artery/arteries that supply the blood to the brain being blocked. Although the study was done on women that drank orange or grapefruit juice, it is thought that eating the fruit would actually have better results.

For every good news story there is an alternate opinion. The NHS Choices website concludes that there is “no evidence that women who eat citrus will reduce the risk of ischemic stroke.”
