Turmeric has been surrounding me lately. It is the chapter of my book I am editing, people are talking about it everywhere I go and it is even in postings on Facebook.
A lot of people know that turmeric is what gives the yellow to curry. What they don’t know is that it is one of the most powerful healing herbs on the planet. It is actually one part of turmeric that gives it super powers. That part is curcumin.
Curcumin is an amazingly powerful anti-inflammatory, pain reliever and anti-oxidant. It has been used for
The anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin are what makes it useful for arthritis. Much of the pain of arthritis is caused by inflammation. By reducing the inflammation it reduces the pain. According to arthritis.org curcumin blocks inflammatory cytokines and enzymes. Different doses and products give different results. You need to make sure you are getting a standardized dose.
Curcumin has a multitude of uses in cancer treatment. It blocks carcinogenic substances, slows or stops the enzyme that helps cancer spread, slows or stops the blood supply for tumours, turns on the gene that signals the cancer cells to die and prevents cell mutation.
The website cancerresearchuk.org states that in a Phase 1 clinical study 25 patients with precancerous cells were given curcumin. The results showed that curcumin stops precancerous cells from becoming cancerous.
It goes on to say that curcumin has anticancer effects. The types of cancer that it is most beneficial for are
Curcumin helps reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol. An abstract for a study on PubMed states “The anti-thrombotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin and the effect of curcumin in decreasing the serum cholesterol level may protect against the pathological changes occurring with atherosclerosis.”
Curcumin is currently being studied as a way of treating and even reversing type 2 diabetes. In a 9 month study with individuals considered pre-diabetic none of those treated with curcumin became diabetic. 16.4% of the placebo group were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at the end of the study.
You should not take turmeric without consulting your doctor if you take
