Some people don’t care for olives. Others, like me, can’t get enough of them. Black olives, green olives, red olives, mild, strong. It doesn’t matter how they look they have some amazing health benefits.
Heart Health and Olives
Olives have a fairly high fat content. What makes them different from other high fat foods? The type of fats they contain have been found to reduce LDL (bad cholesterol), lower blood pressure and decrease inflammation. Inflammation is thought to be the root cause of disease.
Olive oil is monounsaturated fat. This type of fat is responsible for decreasing the LDL levels as well as protecting the cells which decreases inflammation.
As an added bonus, tests on monounsaturated fats are indicating that they help reduce belly fat.
According to the Mayo clinic there is some research that shows olives/olive oil may help with insulin regulation and blood sugar levels in type2 diabetes.
This in turn helps prevent heart disease caused by type2 diabetes.
Olives and Your Cells
Some promising research cited in a number of places but cited here from Rutgers, shows that an ingredient in olive oil kills cancer cells within an hour. This may sound like the next best thing. The problem is they are only just beginning to investigate these findings beyond the laboratory which means both animal and human testing.
In the meantime however, it couldn’t hurt to add Extra Virgin Olive Oil to your diet.
The antioxidant properties of olives/olive oil help protect cells from oxidative damage. This damage causes disease and aging. Antioxidant protection is important for heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many other illnesses.
While I would not recommend putting olive oil on your skin, I think adding it to your diet to replace less healthy fats will be beneficial to your skin.
Recent research is finding that not only are olives/olive oil beneficial in preventing bone loss through aging, they actually increase calcium absorption in your bones. This in turn reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
The next time you are at the market you may want to replace your regular oil with some EVOO as the foodies call it.
