Hypnosis for Treating Depression

Hypnosis is one of my careers I am passionate about.  My fascination with the way the mind works is endless.  Here is one of my articles.  Originally it was published in Suite 101.

Empirical Support for Using Hypnosis in Depression is Growing.  Research is now suggesting that hypnosis is linked to positive changes in patients that are depressed.

Hypnosis encourages a positive outlook and a sense of empowerment. The sense of increased personal choice influences the impact of therapy. This is an important factor in an illness that causes apathy, a lack of motivation and exhaustion.

Who Suffers From Depression

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada 12.6% of adults  experience mood disorders at some time in their lives. Women are almost twice as likely to suffer from depression as men. Symptoms of depression are:
· Apathy
· Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
· Appetite and weight change
· Change in sleeping patterns
· Exhaustion
· Lack of concentration

How Hypnosis Helps

Research shows that hypnosis is effective in treating various conditions which accompany depression. Anxiety, insomnia and pain respond rapidly to relaxation techniques and hypnotic suggestion.  Relief of these depressive symptoms allows the client to focus on regaining their personal empowerment.

Hypnosis builds on the belief that human potential is unlimited. Reconnecting the client with their subconscious mind allows the hypnotherapist to assist clients in recovering lost skills.  Previously unknown barriers can be and are broken down using hypnosis.

In hypnosis the client can acquire tools which do not lead to pharmaceutical dependence. Clients gain creative stress management and coping skills.  Clients increase problem solving skills, social and behavioural skills and relaxation skills.
The client is able to integrate all of these recovered abilities into a new and positive way of dealing with their day to day life. These skills are essential in recovering from depression.

Healing With Hypnosis

Many people are under the mistaken impression that a single session of hypnosis can affect a miraculous turnaround. As with any form of counselling or treatment a number of sessions are required to achieve the full effect. The number of sessions required will vary on a case by case basis.
Sessions consist of a variety of treatments. Hypnosis sessions include educating the client in self hypnosis.  Development of the skills required to combat depressive symptoms is a main goal of the sessions. The ability to choose the skills required in any given situation increases the clients feeling of empowerment. Increased feelings of empowerment combined with the positive benefits gained by using self hypnosis techniques create a much more optimistic outlook.
Research on the therapeutic efficacy of hypnosis in cases of depression has been less than overwhelming.  The literature on the treatment of depression using hypnosis is growing rapidly.
